In the 1860s Father Pandosy settled here on the area not far from Mission Creek. Soon his settlement grew and turned into one of the biggest farms of the Valley. Later it was renamed to Kelowna that means ‘Grizzly Bear’ in one of Indian dialects. Local residents were mostly farmers raising cattle for supplying the Cariboo gold miners with necessary food products, as well as other new-coming settlers. After the railway reached Okanagan Landing the CPR stern wheeler routs was extended to service Kelowna, a town founded in 1892 as a result of rapid local population growth. Kelowna became a city in 1905 and its population continued to grow even during the World Wars I and II.

After premier W.A.C. Bennet together with Princess Margaret opened a floating bridge here in 1958, a new era of Kelowna expansion was started and the city is still growing. Lake Okanagan is believed to be a home for a Canadian ‘Loch Ness Monster’ named Ogopogo. The Indian aborigines called him M’ha-a-itk supposing that it lived in the cave at the bottom of Okanagan Lake. The existence of Ogopogo is widely believed but it hasn’t been proved until nowadays.
